AOS #91 Policy Update: Personal Electronic Devices
I want to bring to your attention that the AOS #91 School Board recently held the first read of a new policy concerning cell phone and personal electronic device use in schools. I invite all families to click the link below to read the proposed language.
If adopted as written, this policy will result in changes to our current practices at MDES. Currently, our students are required to store cell phones in their lockers. The proposed policy expands this to include all personal electronic devices (including tablets and smart watches) and requires them to be stored in designated storage areas identified by the school.
To align with this potential shift, MDES is moving toward a system of collection bins, similar to the protocol we successfully use for attendance at school dances. Our goal is to minimize digital distractions and maximize the High-Impact learning and social connections that happen when students are fully present with one another. We will keep you updated as the Board moves toward a second reading and final decision.
Attendance & Planned Absences
Consistent attendance is a cornerstone of our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS); every day a student is in class is an opportunity for growth that cannot be fully replicated.
If you are planning an absence for your child for reasons other than illness, appointment, religious observance or emergency, please remember to alert the main office in advance. Per state and district guidelines, planned absences can only be approved as "excused" if the request is received ahead of time. Please note that chronic absenteeism (missing 10% or more of the school year) is a factor we must consider in the approval process for any supplemental excused absences.
