MDIHS ChalkTalk 2024-25

Good day!

With only a month of classes left in the school year (only 2 1/2 weeks for seniors), it's important for students to be in classes whenever possible.

In the past some seniors have chosen a day to skip school.  There are seniors that cannot afford to miss a day of school academically.  Seniors in extracurriculars with unexcused absences cannot participate in practice or competitions.  Due to the increased number of seniors absent, it's obvious as to what is happening.  Unless an appointment can be verified, students may not be allowed to participate.

Even a student will be absent in the final days of the semester.  Please contact Ian Braun. Students will need approval to complete classes early.

PARENTS / GUARDIANS:

If you have had any updates since the beginning of school, be sure to update the emergency contacts for your child[ren], including who they can be released to.

You can do this by updating your information in your portal or by contacting Mary Corrow @ mcorrow@mdirss.org.

Mythos NAHS

The National Art Honor Society has put up their final show of 2025. They have accomplished SO much this year (including collaborating on the pride crosswalk, painting the window mural, selling snowflake crafts, making stickers, showcasing their artwork in Chocolatte and Reel Pizza, and more) and I am really proud of this final show they put together. Their work was inspired by myths and fairytales, and should not be missed! The show will be up in the gallery until the last full day of school.

Track & Field Meets
Cyrano

MDI Drama proudly announces its spring production of Cyrano, Barry Kornhauser’s vibrant and inventive adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play Cyrano de Bergerac. This bold and theatrical retelling brings the beloved story of wit, romance, and self-discovery to life on the Higgins-Demas Theater stage at Mount Desert Island High School.

Performances are scheduled for:
May 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7:00 PM
May 18 at 2:00 PM

Kornhauser’s Cyrano captures the humor, heart, and heroism of the original tale, while infusing it with a fresh, modern sensibility that speaks to audiences of all ages. At its center is the unforgettable character of Cyrano—brilliant with words, brave in battle, and burdened by insecurity—who helps a young soldier woo the woman they both love.

This production showcases the talents of MDI High School’s student actors, designers, and crew members, under the direction of Mark Puglisi, with tech directors Carlene Hirsch and Grey Burkart and costuming director Flannery Dillon. With lively performances, imaginative staging, and poignant storytelling, Cyrano promises an unforgettable theater experience.

Tickets will be available at the door. Come support local student theater and enjoy an evening (or afternoon) of laughter, love, and lyrical language.

Vision of a Graduate

MDIRSS logo

A Vision of a Graduate defines the essential knowledge, skills, and attributes we want every student to develop by the time they graduate. It acts as a North Star for our schools—guiding curriculum, instruction, and opportunities both in and beyond the classroom—so that all students are prepared for success in life, career, and college.

In addition to these in-person events with families, staff, and community members, we’ve also been conducting in-person interviews with students to ensure their voices are at the center of this work.

To continue broadening our reach and deepening the conversation, we invite you to share your input using this form. Your voice is an important part of shaping a vision that truly reflects our collective hopes for our graduates.

Thank you for being a part of this important work!

Happy SPRING MDI !

We made it !  Spring is here and it's an exciting time for students and staff as the summer break approaches.  We are seeing lots of spring colds and allergies as we arm up, so please take care of yourselves.  I hope that as the weather gets nicer you are all able to enjoy some sunshine!

All seniors can obtain a copy of their immunizations by coming to the clinic.

As always Incoming Freshman and upcoming juniors need an up to date physical to participate in any clubs or athletics in the fall.  We will be offering physicals here at the school June 2-4th for upcoming Juniors during the school day, please call the clinic to schedule.  As usual we will also be offering physicals in August, date to be announced.

Prior to fall athletics starting in August it gets EXTREMELY busy here with Rank One information and the scramble to get updated physicals in for your student.  Please have your students Rank One information in by August 1.  The ladies in the office are here if you have any questions.

Finally, if your student gets a well child check that is up to date please ask the provider office to fax it to the HS (288-0692). Please follow up with the providers office to make sure it was faxed.

If your student carries an inhaler and/or has serious allergies and you have not spoken to me, please contact me as there is paperwork to be completed for the student to self carry any type of inhalers or medications. As always if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.

Student Absences:
Parents/Guardians: Please contact the school at 288-5011 to report an absence on the ‘Attendance Line’--Option 1
It is very important that parents/guardians contact the school, using the above method, when your child is out of school.  It is vital that we know when someone is out due to illness, so that our school nurse, Tammy Underwood, can reach out to the family and ensure a safe return to school that will keep us all healthy. Approved list of excused absences according to Maine State Law. MDIHS also accepts legal appointments.

Late to school?
All students must check-in at the Main Office upon arrival, even if tardiness is excused.

Need to be dismissed from school?
Calling or sending a note in the morning allows us to give your student a pass to get out of class at the appropriate time.  If a student feels sick once they arrive, they need to be dismissed by our nurse, Tammy Underwood. Students cannot leave the building without permission from a parent/guardian AND checking out at the Main Office.

Forgot something at home?
A parent may drop off items at the main office, and the student will be called down between classes.

Extracurricular Information?
All Extracurricular Information can be found on the Athletics tab on our homepage, www.mdihs.net.  Cancellations and changes will be posted by 1pm, or as soon as possible. Want to find out if school is canceled or delayed? Call 288-5011, ext 7, or check our webpage, www.mdihs.net.

Student  Absence for 3 days or more of school
It is important to notify the school when your student is going to miss 3 days or more of school. The Extended Absence Form should be completed ahead of time by your student and their teachers. Completed forms are turned in to Mr. Braun’s office.
